“My Students Ask for More Math Homework”, A Case Study from Rosary College School, Shmeisani

By Ms. Fayaha Karadsheh, Mathematics Teacher & Coordinator (Grades 4 – 8)

When Rosary College School, Shmeisani decided to reimagine how students engage with math homework, they partnered with Obelus to implement Matific: Gamified Math App. What followed was a transformation that changed not just how students approached assignments, but whether they wanted them at all.

At Rosary College School, curiosity fuels our classrooms. As a mathematics teacher and coordinator for Grades 4 through 8, I’d grown accustomed to hearing one familiar question from students, usually framed as a complaint:

“Do we really have to do homework?”

But this year, something unexpected happened.

A few weeks into the semester, after returning a set of problem-solving exercises assigned through Matific: Gamified Math App, one of my students raised her hand and asked:

“Ms. Fayaha… do you have more homework for next week? These were actually fun.”

I was genuinely surprised. Even more surprising, the rest of the class nodded in agreement. They weren’t asking for less math, they were asking for more.

Understanding Matific’s Impact

Over time, I’ve reflected on what caused this remarkable shift in mindset. Several key factors stand out, and they’re directly connected to how Matific: Gamified Math App is designed:

✓ Thoughtful Challenge

Matific‘s adaptive learning pathways ensure homework is designed to stretch students just enough, challenging, but always achievable. The platform adjusts difficulty based on each student’s performance, so no one feels stuck or bored. Using the teacher dashboard, I can see which concepts need reinforcement and tailor assignments accordingly.

✓ Variety

Each week through Matific brings something new: algebra puzzles, geometry challenges, real-life problem-solving scenarios, and interactive games. Students aren’t repeating the same drill over and over. Instead, they’re exploring concepts through multiple modalities, exactly what research shows drives engagement and deeper understanding.

✓ Support Systems

Matific‘s platform enables peer collaboration and allows students to attempt problems multiple times without penalty. Students know they’re not alone. They can seek after-school help, collaborate in peer study groups using the app, or ask questions without hesitation. The platform records their progress, so I can identify who needs targeted support.

✓ Meaningful Feedback

Through Matific‘s reporting tools, I can see not just correct answers, but how students approached each problem. I regularly ask students which problems they enjoyed and which ones challenged them. Their feedback directly shapes future assignments, and Matific‘s data gives me evidence of what works.

Balancing the Reality

Of course, not every week is perfect. There are moments when students feel overloaded, especially during busy project periods. When that happens, I coordinate with other teachers to manage workload and expectations.

I also make it a priority to normalize mistakes, reminding students that struggle isn’t failure; it’s a vital part of learning. Matific‘s gamified environment actually helps with this: students see mistakes as part of the game, not as personal failures.

“When my students ask for more homework, it tells me they trust the learning process. They’re not just completing tasks, they’re growing, exploring, and taking ownership of their progress. Matific: Gamified Math App gave me the tools to make that happen.”
